North Carolina played a major role in the fight for independence, from the early Patriot resistance at the Battle of Alamance to the pivotal clash at the Battle of Guilford Court House, which so weakened British General Cornwallis's forces that it set the stage for the ultimate American victory at Yorktown. As a battleground between Loyalist and Patriot neighbors and a theater for both British and Continental armies, North Carolina was a state forged in the fires of revolution.
